MineSTEM Assessment

Assessment that keeps every child in their just-right zone.

Assessment is the heart of MineSTEM. Every lesson ends with a quick check for understanding, and the teacher gets a clear next step for each child. That keeps every student in their zone of proximal development: not bored, not lost, always learning. And we grade with a growth mindset, so children see where they are going, not just where they are.

Why assessment comes first

Learning happens just past what a child can do alone.

Educators call it the zone of proximal development: the work a child can’t yet do on their own, but can do with the right support. Too easy, and children coast. Too hard, and they give up. In between is where they grow.

No one can teach to that zone without knowing where each child is today. So MineSTEM checks after every lesson, not once a term, and turns each result into a plain next step for the teacher.

  1. 1Find the zoneThe exit ticket shows where each child is on this lesson.
  2. 2Teach in the zoneThe teacher gives just enough help: a small group, a reteach, a partner.
  3. 3The zone moves aheadOnce a child masters it, they work on their own and the next lesson becomes the new “just right”.
How it works

From the last minute of a lesson to tomorrow’s plan.

The assessment is built into the lesson, so there is nothing extra to schedule, print or score.

  1. 1

    Teach the lesson

Every lesson in the book follows the same seven parts, and one of them is always an Exit Ticket.

  2. 2

    Exit Ticket Quiz

A few quick questions on screen. Children tap a picture to answer, and every question can be read aloud, so even non-readers can show what they know.

  3. 3

    Scored on the spot

Each answer set is scored automatically and filed as evidence for that lesson’s learning targets in the gradebook. No marking pile.

  4. 4

A next step for every child

The teacher’s dashboard suggests what to do: reteach a target several children missed, pull a quick small group, or move ready students ahead.

  5. 5

    Group and assign

Teachers make their own groups and assign the next lesson to a whole group in a tap, so each table works at its own level.

Growth mindset grading

Every grade says where a child is going.

Children learn that ability grows with effort and practice. Our grades are built to tell them so.

Trying Learning Got it Mastered

“Not yet”, never “fail”

The teacher’s gradebook reads Exceeding, Approaching, In progress and Not yet. A child who hasn’t got it has simply not got it yet.

Your best score counts

Children can come back to a quiz after more practice. Their best result is the one that counts, so trying again always pays off.

Progress children can see

On My Progress, children watch themselves move from Trying to Mastered, keep a streak going, and earn stars along the way.

Effort earns points

Points come from finishing each part, finishing lessons and doing well on exit tickets, and finishing a whole unit earns its badge.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Is MineSTEM an adaptive test?

No. Every child takes the same short exit ticket for the lesson they just learned, so results are easy to compare across the class. The adapting happens in what comes next: the dashboard suggests who to reteach, who to pull into a small group and who is ready to move on, and the teacher assigns lessons to each group.

How long does an exit ticket take?

A few minutes at the end of the lesson. It is a short set of picture questions, not a test sitting.

Can young children who don’t read yet take it?

Yes. Children answer by tapping a picture, and every question can be read aloud with the speaker button.

What if a child does poorly?

They see “Trying” or “Learning”, not a failing grade, and they can come back to the quiz after more practice. Their best score is the one that counts. The teacher sees the same result as a clear next step, such as a small-group reteach.

Can teachers change a grade?

Yes. The automatic score is a starting point. Teachers can adjust any grade in the gradebook, add a note, or grade from their own observation and from work in the student’s portfolio.

What do families see?

Teachers can share report cards with families in the MineSTEM family app, and message families directly from the platform.
